- Caron Waterlilies : Elderberry Wine n° 192

On Sally Rudkin's website, several years ago, regularly small blackwork patterns were available.  Lending themselves to countless combinations these pretty building blocks were very suitable to do blackwork embroidery in a creative way.
I used some of them to decorate my needle case (see pictures below).  The blackwork patterns are embroidered on 30 count linen with silk thread :
- Atalie : Toulouse, Santa Fe and Bilbao
- Au ver à soie : Soie d'Alger nos. 292, 1324, 144, 132, 885 and Soie Surfine nos. 528 and 447
- Caron Waterlilies : Elderberry Wine no 192

- Au ver à soie : Soie d'Alger nrs. 292, 1324, 144, 132, 885 en Soie Surfine nrs. 528 en 447
- Caron Waterlilies : Elderberry Wine nr. 192

HARDANGER - Les papillons de Mary Swartz | Mary Swartz's butterflies

Eh oui !

Yes, I fell, once again, for a hardanger design from a Nordic Needle publication : AWARD-WINNING DESIGNS IN HARDANGER EMBROIDERY 2003.
This model has been created by Mary Swartz, a homemaker from Pennsylvania (USA), who since childhood was devoted to cross stitch embroidery, sewing and patchwork... until 1989 when, by any chance, she laid hands on a hardanger magazine.  It was love at first sight !  So much so that after some years of practice she began to design her own patterns.  Between 1996 and 2003 almost every year she obtained a first prize in the Nordic Needle Hardanger Contest.

Jawel !

It was the butterfly design that struck me most.  Mary Swartz created it with the assistance of her husband, a painter and paperhanger.  It is beautiful, isn't it ?
The wings are outlined in buttonhole stitch and filled up with eyelets.  Besides, the inner border is emphasized with woven bars.  The butterfly body is made up of small blocs in satin stitch and executed with threads of different thicknesses (5 and 8).  The antennae are done in holbein stitch.

Always attracted by the unusual I also was immediately impressed by the untypical border of this hardanger model.  Instead of the traditional openwork edge, so characteristic for classic hardanger, we here have a border whose outside and inside are done in buttonhole stitch and that is filled up with square stitch, reversed faggot stitch and eyelets.

The central square of this doily mainly consists of 4 small openwork squares and 4 ship motifs in satin stitch.  The ship motif in hardanger may be inspired on the high, characteristically curled prow of the Viking ships.  That sounds credible because, after all, hardanger embroidery and Vikings, both have their origins in Scandinavia.

This central square is surrounded with openwork floral motifs whose outlines are alternately done in satin stitch and buttonhole stitch, and whose centre is filled up with three quarter flowers in needleweaving.

Mary Swartz's design attracts attention because of its original and inventive use of traditional hardanger stitches.  Satin stitches, buttonhole stitches, reversed faggot stitches, dove's eyes and eyelets are applied an placed in a creative and unusual way, which gives a special charm to the whole.  This embroidery pattern sparkles with originality.  And this is exactly what appealed most to me.  It definitely is an eye-catcher.
I embroidered Mary Swartz's doily on ivory Bellana 22 count, with DMC perlé 5 and 8, no 712.  Even if I usually prefer monochrome embroidery, I admit that this model lends itself for using multiple colours.  Filling up butterflies or flowers with light tints could bring in more brightness.
The finished doily measures 60 cm by 60 cm.

Another model of Mary Swartz, which yielded her a first award in 1998, has been embroidered by my friend Annie M.  The pictures below illustrate this beautiful doily which, it may be said, is executed to perfection.

PUNTO ANTICO - Jacqueline Blanot

My very first contact with Punto Antico took place in 2011, during a class at La Souris Verte in Thionville (Moselle department, France) which I could attend thanks to the intervention of a friend.  This three-day workshop, led by Jacqueline Blanot, meant for me a true revelation of the richness and refinement of Italian embroidery, and particularly of the endless possibilities in Punto Antico.
The work I'd like to present you today is the result of what was taught on the training.  If it is not perfectly executed -after all it was my very first punto antico- it nevertheless gave me full pleasure and great satisfaction.

The centre of this punto antico forms a small square in square stitch, filled up with 9 little roses in bullion stitchRoselline a punto vapore sounds quite more baroque in Italian, but it means exactly the same thing.  Each of these little roses consists of 4 petals, and each petal is made of 3 bullion stitches.  That makes a total of 12 bullion stitches per flower.
Two leaf motives in satin stitch are embroidered on each side of the central square.  Foglia (leaf), is the Italian name.  Jacqueline Blanot called them sapins (pine-trees).  Between the two leaf motives (pine-trees) there is also a staircase-shaped motif in satin stitch.
Each corner of the central square is decorated with a floral pattern.  These flowers are composed of a centre in buttonhole stitch around which a wreath of 6 bullion stitches is embroidered to represent the petals.

The central square of this embroidery is surrounded with a sfilatura a punto rammendo e a punto vapore.  This is an openwork frame in darning stitch and bullion stitch.  It is bordered on both sides with a row in square stitch and the four corners are decorated with different spiderwebs and picots.
This openwork frame is surrounded by a fine frame in satin stitch.

Then, around the openwork zone you will find the same motives as those that have been embroidered around the central square : the pine-tree motif alternating with the stair-shaped motif in satin stitch.  The four corners are emphasized with a leaf motif in satin stitch and a little flower (roselline a punto vapore) with 8 petals, each petal made up of 2 bullion stitches.
And of course, this embroidery would not have been a real punto antico without the so characteristic, the so elegant, but the so difficult to make rolled hem (bord roulotté).  More details and a tutoriel about this can be found in my previous review on Punto Antico.
This punto antico is embroidered on Graziano 38 count with Retors d'Alsace perlé white nos. 8 and 12.  It measures 30 cm by 30 cm.

A tes aiguilles, Yolande !
A juste titre.  C'est magnifique !  I love it !

I was over the moon finding this table-cloth pattern in AWARD-WINNING DESIGNS IN HARDANGER EMBROIDERY 2000, a Nordic Needle publication.  This was made-to-measure for my table : round and 1,25 m in diameter.  Perfect !  So, get to work, Yolande !
I embroidered this table-cloth on Bellana white 8,5 threads per cm with DMC perlé 5 and 8.  It took me about a year of constant and disciplined work.  A huge undertaking !  And I didn't even dare begin any other embroidery all that time, for fear of never taking up and finishing it.  But what a relief it was placing that last stitch and making that very last scissor cut !  Still, every stitch had been worth stitching it.  Thanks to you, designer !
The pattern of this table-cloth has been created by Sue Thompson, an Australian wheat- and sheep-farmer.  She spent 2 years to realize this design that brought her a first prize at Nordic Needle's competition in 2000.  And rightly so.  I love it !
It is a very classic hardanger after all, with its traditional motives in satin stitch and openwork parts in dove's eye.  The squares in satin stitch attract attention because of their surrounding frame in satin stitch which is filled up with 4 rows in reversed faggot stitch.  The original pattern was provided with picots that I didn't execute.
To this embroidery is also attached a strong peronal emotion.  It was my faithful comforting companion during the numerous long hours of watching over my father's deathbed and the period of mourning afterwards.  And it is therefore all the more dear to me.
Judging more comment unnecessary, I let this hardanger introduce itself through the pictures you can find below, after the Dutch-language text version.

I love it !
Meer commentaar lijkt me overbodig.
