HARDANGER - Variations

'Hardanger Embroidery' (ISBN 978-4-529-05488-1), this superb Japanese book that my friend Annie M. gave me, contains some thirty very subtle hardanger models.  The text, unfortunately, is exclusively in Japanese, but having some experience with this embroidery technique one manages to follow the patterns and designs.

So I took a small simple model from this book to make a sort of 'variations on a theme'.  Same frame, different filling.

Wanting to keep the subtlety of the original model, I embroidered on an extra fine linen : Sotema's 38 count L20 in Avorio colour, my favourite.  For thread I chose the Ritorto Giza 25 and 30 colour 501 from Grigoletto Filati.
Linen and thread make the perfect match, adding a certain sheen to the work.
I like the result very much.

SHETLAND LACE - The Second One

Cet admirable châle s'appelle 'The Second One' ('Le Deuxième').

This beautiful shawl is called 'the Second One'.
The model has been created by Monique Boonstra.  All the knitting patterns of this many-sided and talented Dutch designer are published and offered for sale on Etsy and Ravelry, under the name of 'A Passion for Lace'.

'The Second One' ('De Tweede') heet deze fraaie sjaal.

'The Second One' has been knitted in Fine Shetland Lace.
Just like usual Shetland Lace (in English also called Lace Knitting) this extraordinary knitting technique uses traditional Shetland patterns, but it stands out by knitting the lace in both directions (back and forth), and is therefore also called Knitted Lace.  Moreover, Fine Shetland Lace only uses the finest knitting wool (from 800 m/100 gr).

'The Second One' is gebreid in Fine Shetland Lace (Fijn Shetland kantbreiwerk).

I started my 'The Second One' on 7 December 2019 and finished it on 30 April 2020.  The knitting itself went easier than  I had expected for a project of this size.  Only putting the different parts together got me in trouble.  I did not know this 'grafting' technique which, moreover, did not apply very well on this ultra-fine wool.  Without a doubt I need some more practice before I can master this grafting technique.  Anyway, looking at the result, I see my efforts largely rewarded.

'The Second One' is soft and warm, subtle and elegant, refined and seductive...  All the feminine qualities united !

Shetland Lace in its historical perspective
Shetland, that windy group of islands at the north-east of Scotland is well-known for its sheep's wool.
When the Vikings arrived there around the year 800 the sheep were so numerous already that they have named one of the islands Fair Isle, which means Isle of Sheep.
Knitting has been there a tradition since 1300.  It was a daily activity for centuries, providing an additional income to the poor rural families.  Thanks to the Dutch and German fishing fleet the knitted shawls, stockings, caps and gloves easily found their way to the continent, their most important market.
The wool already being of the highest quality, the patterns also gradually gained in importance and fame.  No written designs being available at that time, the patterns were memorized and handed down from mother to daughter.
The combination of the fine texture of the Shetland wool and the open work patterns make this traditional knitwear look like lace and give it the name of Shetland Lace.
