Blackwork : Queene Besse's Chesse Boarde (3)

Let's have a look now at the second row in Leon Conrad's chessboard, a blackwork design rare to find nowadays.
First you will find the pictures of the appropriate fields : a7, c7, e7 and g7.  Then, and also spread over the following articles on this topic, an illustrated summary of the origin and the history of blackwork.

BLACKWORK  :  L'HISTOIRE  |  DE GESCHIEDENIS  |  THE HISTORY

As with so many other embroidery techniques the beginning of blackwork lies in such a distant past with roots branched all over the world, that it is impossible to define the precise location and time of its origin.  However, in the case of blackwork we may pretend almost with certainty that the first motives were introduced in Western Europe by the Moors of North Africa, during their occupation of Spain, from the 8th century on.

The original blackwork models were linear, arabesque decorations, exclusively abstract, and based on geometric schemes, symmetry, repetition and proportion.
They are the same that we also find in the Arab world on door jambs, in mosaics and other architectural decorations.  Some of these motives are so elementary that early traces are found on creations of Byzantine, Roman and ancient Greek origin, and even on earlier, primitive remains.

Punto Antico

Through my hardanger embroideries I had accumulated lots of experience with embroidery stitches such as flatstitch and buttonhole stitch.  However, when I discovered on the Net the Italian sophisticated effect that these stitches could generate, I felt ready for my new challenge that was called Punto Antico.
The embroidery I wish to present you in this article has been executed from a model by Bruna Gubbini, one of the most famous Italian Punto Antico designers.  It measures 16 cm by 16 cm and I embroidered it on 36 count linen with Coats Fiorentino 8 and 12.

The center of this Punto Antico model consists of pulled thread work, enriched with a filling and bullion stitches.  It is surrounded by 4 motives in satin stitch and 4 flowers in bullion stitch.
The corners of this embroidery are executed in square stitch, satin stitch and bullion stitch.  They are connected with a narrow bar in satin stitch and square stitch.
The border is composed of a contour in square stitch and the characteristic rolled hem, which is fixed with small sewing stitches.

After all, what is Punto Antico ?

Punto Antico is an embroidery technique that differs from the others through the use of specific basic stitches and a specific border (Italian hem).
The characteristic stitches are : the satin stitch (also called flat stitch), the bullion stitch, the square stitch, the whip stitch, the curl stitch and the buttonhole stitch.  When applied to finer and more frivolous motives than the austere style of other embroidery techniques such as hardanger, these stitches create a refined and artistic effect.  A sort of chic.
Also characteristic in Punto Antico is the border.  With the exception of sheets, towels and curtains Punto Antico embroidery is always finished with the Italian hem.  It consists of a contour in openwork against which the rolled hem of the fabric is fastened.  One makes this hem by rolling the linen between a moistened thumb and index finger to obtain a hard roll.  Then this slim roll is fixed to the openwork with small sewing stitches.  It is a delicate operation that requires practice and patience before one arrives at an even exceptable execution.  The pictures show that I am still not at that level.
If, in all probability, the cradle of this embroidery technique stands in a far more remote past, the basis of today's Punto Antico is situated in Venise, where in the 15th century it knew a revival and its largest bloom, before sinking again into oblivion.
The 15th century embroidery possessed a rich structure and was completely filled up.  Today's Punto Antico is lighter, there is more unworked linen and the motives are often combined with openwork.  However, the basic stitches and the special hem, which are so typical for Punto Antico, are preserved.
The name itself, Punto Antico, is fairly recent and only in use since the beginning of the 20th century, when this technique was rediscovered.

Blackwork : Queene Besse's Chesse Boarde (2)

In this second article on Blackwork I want to show you the first row of Leon Conrad's chess board.  For the chess lovers amongst you, it concerns the fields b8, d8, f8 and h8.
It is with a special intention that I illustrate each field with two pictures : on the small one the geometric shapes and surfaces immediately jump to the eye while on the big picture fillings, lines and colours become more prominent.

Blackwork stands for an old embroidery technique in which originally one embroided linear and arabesque decorations with black thread on a white support.  Although these figures nowadays are implemented in various colours, the technique itself preserved its name.
