RETICELLO - PUNTO ANTICO - Giuliana Buonpadre (4/5)

Sampler di Irma - The punto antico section
In the two previous articles I described the central square of my Sampler di Irma into detail.  This time we take a close look at the punto antico section, namely the wide zone between the central square and the narrow outside frame with the 120 reticello windows, topic of my next article.
This wide zone, which actually is composed of 4 bands of different width, constitutes a broad frame around the central square.  Each side of it is identical with the opposite one.
Just as in the central square I started by tracing all sections in square stitch.  Only then I filled up the areas in punto antico style : patterns in satin stitch embellished with bullion stitch and curl stitch.
I am sure it hasn't escaped your notice that this punto antico style is showing a striking resemblance to hardanger embroidery.  You're right : it's all about the same stitches.  But in hardanger embroidery they are placed and combined in a different way.
So, could there be a connection between these two embroidery techniques ?  Unlikely, one might think.  After all, Punto Antico already came to entire development during the 15th-16th century in Italy, while the Hardanger technique knew its full bloom only 300 years later (19th century) in Norway.  And yet, the resemblance is so striking.  So, I believe that Punto Antico, if it wasn't the basis, must have significantly influenced the Hardanger technique.  I don't know (yet) how the connection precisely worked.  However, the topic is fascinating enough to carry out some research.  I'll keep you informed as soon as I have found an explanation for the remarkable similarity between Punto Antico and Hardanger.    But now back to my Sampler di Irma.

The first band of the wide punto antico area, the nearest one to the central square, contains patterns in satin stitch embellished with bullion stitch and curl stitch.  The 4 sides of this band are almost identical.  Only a slight difference in the central pattern makes the distinction.
The corners of this band are not simply closed, but worked out with a square pattern that, because of its size, cuts into the second band, which is much wider.

In the second band too all sections have been traced previously in square stitch and then filled up with patterns in satin stitch, bullion stitch and curl stitch.
Some openwork windows, containing a simple reticello pattern in buttonhole stitch, introduce the necessary lightness in this fully embroidered zone.  A slight difference in the central satin stitch pattern of each side  -cable stitch instead of curl stitch-  is, here again, the reason why the sides are not all identical, but equal two by two.  The reticello patterns in the openwork windows too give some variation.
The corners of this second band are closed and contain, in addition to the large square pattern of the first band, a small corner pattern in satin stitch.
The third band of the punto antico area contrasts with the other ones by the absence of bullion stitches.  Only square stitch, satin stitch and curl stitch were used for this band.
The fourth band, bordered in square stitch like all the other sections of this embroidery, exclusively contains patterns in satin stitch.

Figure 5

In the next and also last article on my Sampler di Irma I'll spotlight the narrow outside frame with the 120 reticello windows.  But before closing this one, another bit of history :

FROM RETICELLO TO NEEDLE LACE  :  THE HISTORY (4/5)
Needle lace, in its evolution towards symbol of opulence and wealth, sometimes reached in its applications the level of extravagance and even nonsense : lace collars grew to outrageous size (see IMAGE 5) and under Louis XIII (1601-1643) even weaponry and horse harness were decked out with lace.
Image 5

Despite the insanely high prices demand for needle lace continued to rise and reached its peak in France under Louis XIV (1638-1715).  Nevertheless, up to half of the 17th century, producing centers of fine embroidery and needle lace remained restricted to Venice and, because of their close commercial ties and cultural cooperation, also to Flanders.  Change came when the French Sun King (Le Roi Soleil - Louis XIV) realized the colossal capital flow that escaped from his country caused by purchasing Venitian needle lace.  He ordered Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), then Minister of Finance and State, to do something about it.  When a simple protectionist measure  -the imposition of heavy import duties on Venetian needle lace-  didn't have the desired effect on the financial outflow, Colbert showed a smart example of his political ingenuity.  He invited the best Venetian and Flemish embroiderers to France and installed them under particularly advantageous and privileged conditions in the Royal workshops in Paris, Alençon and later on also in Argentan, Sedan and Reims.  Although initially there was no essential difference with Venetian embroidery, roughly called Point de Venise so far, Colbert saw to it that the in France manufactured neelde lace was called Point de France.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert
Colberts measures turned out to be a direct hit.  The Point de France immediately gained support and the financial outflow towards Italy shrank visibly.  This inflicted such a heavy blow on the Venetian lace industry that the Italian city-state issued severe measures against emigrating embroiderers and their family members staying behind.  Too late.  In the meantime French needlewomen had become familiar with the delicate technique and the Royal workshops produced the finest and most beautiful needle lace.
Curiously, a similar scenario took place in early 18th-century Russia, to which Venetian needle lace had found its way too and where it was being paid in gold by the Russian nobility.  To stop the financial outflow Tsar Peter the Great (1685-1725) invited Venetain nuns to the convent of Kadom (approx. at 500 km South-Est of Moscow), where they trained local embroiderers in Venetian needle lace.  The synergy between the acquired Venetian skill and the traditional Russian embroidery techniques gave birth to a new, very laborious but unique needle lace, known under the name of Kadomsky Veniz.

To be continued...
