AEMILIA ARS

In Parma (Italy) I had the opportunity to take a day and a half-course on Aemilia Ars with Paola Negri.  I brought up the subject already in my post on Itali Invita.

After the Parma fair Giuliana Buonpadre, at her home in Verona, showed me her valuable collection of books and magazines, in which the pictures of old reticella embroideries and Aemilia Ars lace won my greatest admiration.  This was Art with a capital letter !  It made me speechless.
Once back home, and having Paola Negri's lessons still freshly in mind and fingers, I quickly continued the basic exercises.

Echte kunst !

La technique  -  The technique  -  De techniek

Aemilia Ars is a technique which is executed on a cardboard base, and not on a piece of fabric stretched in a frame.  This is the essential distinction with embroidery and the reason why Aemilia Ars is considered as needle lace.
In Aemilia Ars the basis consists of three layers of flexible cardboard, on the upper one of which the motif has been drawn.  Furthermore, the drawing is covered with a sheet of tracing paper in order to preserve the thread from soiling.  A few coarse stitches all around hold the four layers together.  So, this is the flexible basis of our Aemilia Ars : the equivalent of the piece of linen stretched between the rings of a traditional embroidery frame.

Then, according to complicated rules and depending on shape and size of the motif, small holes are being pierced through the four layers of the basis.  By weaving a thread through these perforations we create the points of support that will carry the future embroidery and hold it on the basis.  These supporting threads will be cut later on.  The work area is quite ready now and the real embroidery can begin.

In order to facilitate the work the flexible basis is laid on the forefinger and held in place with the thumb and middle finger.  Traditionally, there are only two kinds of motifs in Aemilia Ars  : geometric ones and vegetals.  The variety of stitches too remains rather modest : only the buttonhole stitch, the punto chiaro and the whip stitch are used, and the picot also, which here is called "il gruppetto".
Because of the delicacy of the work, one of the major difficulties of Aemilia Ars is the regularity of the stitches.  The quality of your work depends on it.  Only when all the stitches has been executed in a perfectly regular way, then your Aemilia Ars work becomes real art.  The photos of my trials (further on in this article) clearly illustrate that I am still far from that level.  I tried the two kinds of motifs already, with varying success.  But only practice makes perferct.  So, this introduction wil certainly have a sequel.
Once the motif is embroidered, support threads are cut.  The cardboard layers come loose.  What remains is a delicate piece of lace...  Unless something went badly wrong...

Usually Aemilia Ars is executed with DMC Cordonnet no. 50, 60, 80 or 100, depending on the motif : the finer the motif, the finer the thread.  And with pointed needles nos. 9 and 10.
Aemilia Ars needle lace has many applications : to edge some needle work or clothing, to be worked in an embroidery, as an inlay in household linen, etc.
To those who would like to learn this fascinating technique I highly recommend the excellent manuals and DVD's from Quaderni di Aemilia Ars, published by Nuova S1.

The origins of Aemilia Ars
The Aemilia Ars technique itself goes back to a distant past and arises from 16th-17th-century Venetian reticella.  How openwork exactly developed into needle lace has been explained in one of my previous posts (see Reticello-Punto Antico-Giuliana Buonpadre 2/5).
However, the needle lace that we nowadays consider as Aemilia Ars dates from the beginning of the 20th century and has to be situated within the context of Art Nouveau.
This trend originated in the second half of the 19th century in England as a reaction against the machine-made mass-produced articles of the industrial revolution.  Arts and Crafts Movement  -as this movement was called with John Ruskin and William Morris as the major driving forces-  aimed to rehabilitate careful craftsmanschip and creativity.  This new tendency spread quickly all over Europe where, according to the countries, it arises under different names : what's called Art Nouveau in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, is known as Jugenstil in Germany and Austria, and has been named Liberty in Italy.  Although this Art Nouveau movement was granted only a short life (from the second half of the 19th century until 1914), it has left, especially in art and architecture, visible marks.
In the context of this new ideology many associations were founded, mainly by aristocracy and European governments, all of which had the purpose to revive the artisanal sector in decline due to the industrial revolution.  So, in 1898 in Bologna (Italy), the Aemilia Ars association was founded to protect and promote the decorative craftsmanship of the Italian region Emilia.  Although the purpose of the association aimed at all the local handicrafs, it was needle lace which became lastingly well-known and would go down in history as Aemilia Ars.
On the Italian website Arteliberty you will find photos of the most impressive original Aemilia Ars needle lace from the beginning of the 20th century.  Click on the picture below to view :

In order to extend the travel pleasure on our return from Italia Invita (see my previous post) we decided a stopover in Rapallo, a small Italian coastal town in the province of Genoa.  In addition to the picturesque charm that emanates from the Ligurian coast villages, Rapallo pleasantly surprised me by its Museo del Merletto, a Lace Museum hosted in the beautiful 17th-century Villa Tigullio.

The collection of the Museo del Merletto contains some 1400 pieces in bobbin lace, all dating from the 16th to the 20th century, many of which are extremely rare and valuable.  Moreover, to this superb collection were added more than five thousand diagrams and patterns in cardboard, formerly used by the local lace industry.

I was amazed to find also 17th- and 18th-century Flemish lace, made in my own native region !

But the jewel of the Museo del Merletto is undoubtedly the Zennaro panel.  This is the largest piece in bobbin lace I ever saw : it is 8.10 m (8.86 yards) long and 1.15 m (1.26 yards) high !

This masterpiece in bobbin lace has been realized by the Manifattura Mario Zennaro in 1964, only four years before the closure of this local lace enterprise, and was commissioned by a U.S. shipping company to decorate the lounge of one of its cruise ships.

ITALIA INVITA 2015

This time I was there !  The international neeldework and textile fair in Parma (Italy) opened its doors from 15 to 17 May.  At the last minute the organizers had postponed the opening a week, which confused some exhibitor's planning to the extent that they finally withdrew.  According to reports this disorder was also the reason why the public turned up less numerous than in previous years.  Nevertheless, it was a great event and a rich experience for me.

First stop, of course : Filofilo', Giuliana Buonpadre's stand, where I felt a great pleasure to find again my reticello.  It was exposed among other embroideries that were dealt with in her last book Herbarium.

As a surprise Giuliana had invited her former Reticello and Aemilia Ars teacher : Paola Negri, a person of great renown in Italian embroidery circles.  Barely arrived I found myself with a needle in my hand for an Aemilia Ars workshop of a day and a half with Paola Negri.  Aemilia Ars : the new challenge !

Filofilo' was always crowded and the ladies following Giuliana's course worked hard and concentrated.

There was also a great interest in her books.

The Filofilo' stand and Giuliana's workshop were a place of pleasant meetings.  In addition to Paola Negri, Giuliana's former teacher, I met a lot of other sympathetic people, as Lilian Kok (left on the photo), who came all from the Netherlands to Parma to visit the fair and follow a reticello college with Giuliana Buonpadre.  You can find all her work on her interesting blog : http://handwerkcafewaddinxveen.blogspot.com

I keep a particularly warm memory of Flaminia (right on the picture) : Sicilian, lawyer, assistant of Giuliana and admirer of her works.

In addition to Filofilo' embroidery schools weren't lacking at all : Instituto Cimbro Luserna, Il Merletto di Bologna, Arte Decorative Italiane, Associazione Puntomaglie, Ars Aesis and many others.

WOW !

And, of course, I can't forget the many mercerias (needlwork shops), as Tombolo e Disegni.  WOW !

Bovendien waren de mercerias (shops van borduurbenodigdheden) talrijk aanwezig, waaronder uiteraard Tombolo e Disegni.  WOW !

I even met compatriots !  Two sympathetic ladies from Leuven (Belgium) who each year put up their stand at Parma's fair : Serena.

Because of my Aemilia Ars college with Paola Negri unfortunately the necessary time was lacking to make a thorough tour of the fair so that I had to content myself with a flash visit in the morning before opening.  Fortunately, while I laboured on Aemilia Ars, my personal photographer (my husband) had ample time to make a photo report of the most important stands and some small embroidery gems that were exposed.
