Si le mot blackwork ne vous évoque que les vêtements surchargés de l'ère élisabéthaine, je peux vous assurer que cette ancienne technique de broderie offre de nombreuses applications plus modernes.

Bien que les points et la technique de base soient demeurés inchangés, les modèles se sont adaptés aux style et goût contemporains.
Le blackwork moderne est en général assez sobre, s'effectue dans toutes les couleurs et il sait trouver de jolies applications dans la vie quotidienne d'aujourd'hui : vêtements, linge, sacs à main et toutes sortes de décoration.
Le blackwork est donc bel et bien vivant.  Particulièrement agréable dans son exécution, cette technique de broderie mérite bien un essai.

Mocht de naam blackwork alleen maar de overladen kledij van het Elizabethaanse tijdperk bij u oproepen, dan kan ik u verzekeren dat deze oude borduurtechniek heel wat modernere toepassingen biedt. 
Hoewel de steken en de basistechniek onveranderd zijn gebleven, hebben de patronen zich aangepast aan de hedendaagse stijl en smaak.
Modern blackwork is doorgaans sober, wordt in alle kleuren uitgevoerd en vindt leuke applicaties in het tegenwoordige leven van alledag : kledij, huis- en tafellinnen, handtassen en allerhande decoratie.
Blackwork is dus levend en wel.  Bijzonder aangenaam in de uitvoering en zeker de moeite waard om het te proberen.

If the name blackwork only evokes to you the over-ornate clothing of the Elizabethan era, then I can assure you that this ancient embroidery technique offers a large range of modern applications.  Although the stitches and the basic technique have remained unchanged, the patterns have adapted to the contemporary style and taste.
Modern blackwork is generally sober and is carried out in a variety of colours.  Moreover, you can have great fun finding applications for today's life : clothing, bed and table linen, bags and all kinds of decoration.
So, blackwork is alive and well.  Particularly pleasant in its execution, this embroidery technique definitely deserves a trial.

Jours et Filet Brodé | Drawn Thread Work and Filet Lace

Pour cet exercice de jours j'ai puisé mon inspiration dans les livres de Giuliana Buonpadre, Sonrel et Thérèse de Dillmont.  L'ouvrage contient trois cadres ajourés avec au centre un filet au point de reprise.  Une telle construction, des jours avec un centre au point de reprise, on la retrouve souvent dans la broderie italienne contemporaine.

Les cadres
Deux côtés du cadre extérieur sont composés d'un fil noué au milieu, liant 4 faisceaux sur lesquels j'ai brodé une ligne ondulée en écru au point de corail.  Ensuite, j'ai brodé une seconde ligne ondulée, mais avec de petites coquilles en gris au point de reprise cette fois-ci.
Les deux autres côtés de ce cadre, par contre, sont constitués de 2 fils qui sont noués à hauteur différente et de telle façon que les faisceaux font des zigzags.  Le milieu est exécuté au point cordonnet en écru et agrémenté, en haut comme en bas, de petites coquilles grises au point de reprise.
Les angles sont décorés de fleurs, de petites roues et d'araignées au point de reprise.

Le cadre central est un jour qui contient des barrettes brodées en zigzag sur 4 fils de toile au point de feston.  Il est, aussi bien à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur, bordé d'une ligne grise au double point de feston.  Les angles sont constitués d'araignées.

Le cadre intérieur, le plus large des trois, s'est formé en brodant un fil noué au centre, créant ainsi des faisceaux.  Ensuite, sur ces faisceaux, j'ai brodé 2 lignes ondulées au point de corail.  Et pour finir, j'ai effectué, tous les deux faisceaux, une araignée en gris.
Les angles sont constitués d'une araignée au centre, entourée de petits triangles au point de reprise.

Le centre
Le centre se compose d'un motif de papillon brodé sur un filet qui est exécuté à l'italienne : en chaîne et en trame, couper 2 fils et laisser 2 fils, ensuite envelopper deux fois les fils restants, d'abord horizontalement puis verticalement.  Ceci crée un filet renforcé sur lequel on brode le motif au point de reprise.
Selon le procédé allemand, cependant, les fils sont enveloppés diagonalement, ce qui donne au filet encore plus de fermeté.  Voir à ce sujet le livre de Luzine Happel, Mustertücher - Lichte Muster (Rebrodes sur Réseau Clair).
Tous les diagrammes pour filet crochet et point de croix (motifs et monogrammes) se prêtent également à la broderie sur filet.  D'ailleurs, cette technique s'employait jadis souvent aux bordures de rideaux et aux housses de coussin.

J'ai brodé cet ouvrage de jours sur de l'étamine de coton couleur ivoire 10 fils avec du DMC perlé n° 12, couleur 712 et de l'Anchor fiorentino n° 12, couleur 400.
Il mesure 46 cm sur 46 cm.

I found inspiration for this exercise in openwork in the books by Giuliana Buonpadre, Sonrel and Thérèse de Dillmont.  The embroidery contains three openwork frames with a central net in darning stitch.  A construction like this one, openwork with a center in darning stitch, is often found in contemporary Italian embroidery.

The frames
Two sides of the outer frame are made up of a thread in the center, bundling 4 groups of threads on which I embroidered in ecru a wavy line in coral stitch.  Afterwards I embroidered a second wavy line, with little grey shells in darning stitch this time.
The other two sides of this frame contain 2 threads which are knotted on a different height and in such a way that the bundled groups run zigzag.  The middle section is worked in ecru and in whip stitch and the top as well as the bottom are made of grey shells in darning stitch.  I finished the angles with spiderwebs and flowers in darning stitch.

The middle frame is an openwork in which 4 threads are embroidered in zigzag using a buttonhole stitch.  I surrounded this frame, leaving 2 threads of the fabric on both sides, with a border in double buttonhole stitch.  The angles are formed by spiderwebs.

The openwork of the inner and also broadest frame has been obtained by embroidering one central knotted thread, to create bundles.  Then, on these bundles I embroidered 2 wavy lines in coral stitch.  And finally, I executed a grey spiderweb on every other bundle.  The angles are embellished with a spiderweb in the center, surrounded by little triangles in needle weaving.

The centre
It consists of a butterfly motif embroidered on a net which is executed in the Italian way : therefor cut away, in warp and weft, 2 threads and leave 2 threads.  Then, wrap the remaining threads twice, first in the horizontal then in the vertical way.  This creates a reinforced net on which finally the motif is embroidered in darning stitch.
Following the German method, however, the threads would be wrapped diagonally, which then gives even more firmness to the net.  See therefor Luzine Happel's book Mustertücher - Lichte Muster.
All patterns for filet crochet and cross stitch (figures and monograms) are also suitable to be embroidered on a net.  By the way, this technique was frequently used on curtains and cushion-covers.

I embroidered this openwork exercise on 25 count ivory cotton cloth with DMC perlé no 12, colour 712 and Anchor fiorentino no 12, colour 400.
It measures 46 cm by 46 cm.

Mijn inspiratie voor deze oefening in ajourwerk heb ik geput uit de boeken van Giuliana Buonpadre, Sonrel en Thérèse de Dillmont.  Het borduurwerk bevat drie opengewerkte kaders met in het midden een netwerk in stopsteek.  Een dergelijke opbouw, ajourwerk met een centrum in stopsteek, wordt vaak aangetroffen in hedendaags Italiaans borduurwerk.

De kaders
Twee zijden van het buitenste kader bestaan uit een geknoopte draad in het midden die 4 groepen draden bundelt, waarop dan in ecru een golvende lijn in geknoopte koraalsteek komt.  Daarna heb ik een tweede golvende lijn geborduurd, deze keer met grijze schelpjes in stopsteek.
De twee andere zijden van dit kader daarentegen zijn opgebouwd uit 2 draden die op verschillende hoogte zodanig zijn geknoopt dat de gebundelde groepen in zigzagbeweging verlopen.  Het midden is omwoeld in ecru en de boven- en onderkant bestaan uit grijze schelpjes in stopsteek.
De hoeken zijn afgewerkt met spinnetjes en bloempjes in stopsteek.

Het middelste kader is een ajourwerk waarin telkens 4 draden zigzag en in festonsteek geborduurd zijn.  Dit kader is zowel aan de binnen- als aan de buitenzijde, en op 2 draden afstand, afgezet met een boord in dubbele festonsteek.  De hoeken zijn gevormd door spinnetjes.

Het ajourwerk van het binnenste en breedste kader wordt gevormd door 1 centrale geknoopte draad te borduren, waardoor bundels ontstaan.  Daarop worden dan 2 golvende lijnen in koraalsteek aangebracht.  Ten slotte heb ik om de andere bundel een grijs spinnetje geplaatst.
De hoeken zijn opgebouwd uit een spinnetje in het midden met daarrond driehoekjes in schuine stopsteek.

Het centrum
Dit bestaat uit een vlindermotief dat geborduurd is op een netwerk, uitgevoerd op Italiaanse wijze :  in schering en inslag 2 draden wegknippen en 2 draden laten, vervolgens de resterende draden eerst horizontaal en daarna vertikaal tweemaal omwikkelen.  Hierdoor ontstaat een verstevigd net, waarop ten slotte het motief in stopsteek wordt geborduurd.
Volgens de Duitse methode worden de draden echter diagonaal omwoeld, waardoor een nog vaster netwerk verkregen wordt.  Zie daarvoor het boek van Luzine Happel Mustertücher - Lichte Muster (Rebrodes sur Réseau Clair).
Alle telpatronen voor filethaakwerk en kruisjessteek (figuren, letters) zijn als motief geschikt om op een netwerk te borduren.  Deze techniek werd vroeger trouwens veelvuldig aangewend voor het vervaardigen van gordijnranden en kussenovertrekken.

Het geheel is uitgevoerd op 10-draads ivoorkleurig katoen-etamine met DMC perlé nr. 12, kleur 712 en Anchor fiorentino nr. 12, kleur 400.
Het meet 46 cm op 46 cm.

Comme déjà mentionné dans mon tout premier article sur ce sujet (article du 7 février), j'ai brodé les champs de l'échiquier de Leon Conrad séparément et, par la suite, cousu sous forme de livre.
Le tissu, je l'ai trouvé sur un marché aux puces pour couturières.  C'était une chute vendue par une créatrice de costumes de théâtre.  Cette étoffe noire au fil d'or et au motif différent sur le devant et l'envers me semblait appropriée à mon livre en blackwork broché.
La boucle, sortant directement de la boîte à boutons de ma mère, date sans doute des années 1940.  Elle se marie très bien avec le tissu, non ?

Zoals reeds vermeld in mijn allereerste artikel over dit onderwerp (artikel van 7 februari), heb ik alle velden van Leon Conrads schaakbordpatroon afzonderlijk geborduurd en achteraf in boekvorm genaaid.
De stof heb ik aangetroffen op een rommelmarkt voor naaisters : een overschotje dat werd verkocht door een ontwerpster voor toneelkostuums.  Dit zwarte weefsel met gouddraad en verschillend motief op voor- en achterkant leek me de gepaste bekleding voor mijn ingenaaid blackworkboek.
De sluiting, een gesp die ik in mijn moeders knopendoos heb aangetroffen, dateert ongetwijfeld van de jaren 1940.  Ik vond ze wonderwel passen bij de stof.

As already mentioned in my very first article on this subject (review of February 7th), I embroidered all fields of Leon Conrad's chess board separately and afterwards I sew them into book form.
I bought the cloth at a designer of theatre costumes, at a flea market for seamstresses.  This black fabric with gold thread and a different motif on its front and back seemed the appropriate textile to cover my blackwork book.
The buckle I used and which I found in my mother's button box, dates undoubtedly from the 1940's.  They are made for each other, aren't they ?

In this article but one about Leon Conrad's blackwork pattern I wanted to show you the seventh row of the chessboard : the fields b2, d2, f2 and h2.

A partir du 17e siècle le blackwork européen fut souvent effectué en deux, trois, voire plus de couleurs et complété d'une variété croissante d'autres points.  Progressivement ceux-ci prennent le dessus et délogent le blackwork traditionnel de la scène.  La broderie blackwork sombre complètement dans l'oubli.
Ni le XVIIIe ni le XIXe siècle ne rapporteront quelque blackwork de valeur.  Le Dictionary of Needlework*, une encyclopédie anglophone sur les ouvrages d'aiguille, paru en 1882, ne fait même plus mention de cette technique.
C'est seulement à partir du XXe siècle que la broderie blackwork connait sa relance actuelle.  Les créateurs modernes, fouillant dans le passé pour trouver des idées nouvelles, ont déniché cette ancienne technique et l'ont complétée d'effects et de formes contemporains.  L'histoire se répète...

Vanaf de 17de eeuw wordt het Europese blackwork vaak in twee, drie en zelfs meerdere kleuren uitgevoerd, met toevoeging van eeen steeds rijker wordende variëteit van andere steken.  Deze laatste krijgen gaandeweg de bovenhand en verdringen het traditionele blackwork van het toneel.  Blackwork zinkt compleet weg in de vergetelheid.
Zowel de 18de als de 19de eeuw leveren weinig of geen blackwork op.  De Dictionary of Needlework*, een Engelstalig lexicon uit 1882, maakt zelfs niet eens meer melding van deze techniek.
Pas sinds de 20ste eeuw kent het blackworkborduurwerk een heropleving.  Moderne ontwerpers, speurend in het verleden naar nieuwe ideeën, hebben de oude techniek herontdekt en aangevuld met eigentijdse vormen en effecten.  De geschiedenis herhaalt zich...

From the 17th century on, European blackwork was often executed in two, three or even a whole variety of colours, completed with an increasing number of other stitches.  These ones progressively got the upper hand and pushed the traditional blackwork off the stage.  Blackwork embroidery sank completely into oblivion.
Neither the 18th nor the 19th century yielded any valuable blackwork.  The Dictionary of Needlework*, an encyclopedia on needlework from 1882, doesn't even mention this technique anymore at all.
In the 20th century however, blackwork knows a revival.  Modern designers, delving into the past in search of new ideas, rediscovered the old technique.  They complemented it by contemporary shapes and effects.  History repeats itself...
