Reticella - Reticello

Reticello, or Reticella, has its origins in 15th-century Venice.  Spread all over Western Europe, this needle lace remained very popular until the 17th century.  Then it passed into oblivion : the same fate that befell many other embroidery techniques.  Only from the end of the 19th century on reticello embroidery knew its actual revival.
Among the rare contemporary reticello designers Giuliana Buonpadre is one of the most renowned.  Innovative in shape and colours this many-sided designer from Verona in Italy has created her own style corresponding to the modern taste.
I got the opportunity to follow a training with her in June 2011.  A friend of mine, meeting Giuliana at the annual expo l'Aiguille en Fête in Paris, had made the necessary arrangements.  An exceptional chance not to be missed !
The very first thing we learned during this reticello training was the preparation of the fabric : to mark out the work zone by pulling out one thread, to whip-stitch the border and to embroider a contour in square stitch.  Then to cut and pull out the threads and finally to work the woven bars.  Rather laborious, that reticello, and not quite that easy !
Only on the second day of the training Giuliana began to teach how to fill up the openworked squares with reticello-basic stitches : the Campanella, the Foglietta, the Incroci con pippiolini, the Fiorellino, the Fiore a punto festone con petalo and many others.  Sounds seductively Italian, doesn't it ?

Once back home from my intensive four days' training I brimmed over with reticello.  I thought reticello.  I dreamed reticello.  I was reticello.  The newly acquired knowledge yearned for expression and straight away I started a reticello embroidery : Rombi in azzurro by Giuliana Buonpadre.
Although the original pattern was represented as a cushion of 60 cm by 60 cm and embroidered with blue thread, I realized it as an ivory-coloured table-cover worked out with thread of the same colour.  Moreover, I added two small frames and ended with a large border in satin stitch and wave stitch, and an edge in punto chiaro.
But actually it's the centre that matters most.  Apart from some diamond-shaped motives filled with a flower in bullionstitch, it contains five squares which are filled up with a variety of reticello stitches.
I embroidered this table-cover on Sotema 38 count Italian linen, with Anchor Fiorentino 8 and 12, no 387.
