SCHWALM - Luzine Happel (2/2)

Dans ce deuxième article sur mon sampler en broderie schwalm, inspiré par les livres de Luzine Happel, je vous propose de regarder de près les points des deux autres rangées et les bords.
Comme mentionné dans mon premier article sur ce sujet, la rangée du milieu est composée de variations sur le point d'oeillet (Limetrosen).  Ci-dessous vous trouverez les 5 différents points en gros plan.

In this second post on my Schwalm sampler inspired by the books of Luzine Happel, we'll take a closer look at the stitches of the other two rows and the borders.
As already mentioned in my first post on the subject, the middle row is filled with variations on the eyelet stittch (Limetrosen).  Below you will find the 5 different stitches of this row in close-up.

In dit tweede artikel over mijn schwalmsampler, geïnspireerd op de boeken van Luzine Happel, gaan we de steken van de twee andere rijen en de boord onder de loep nemen.
Zoals reeds vermeld in het eerste artikel over dit onderwerp bestaat de middelste rij uit variaties op de madeiraster (Limetrosen).  Hieronder vindt u close-ups van de 5 verschillende steken.

Enfin, la dernière rangée contient 5 motifs au point de reprise brodés sur réseau (filet).  Voir photos ci-dessous.

Finally, the third row contains 5 darning stitches embroidered on filet.  Pictures below.

De derde rij ten slotte bevat 5 motieven in stopsteek geborduurd op een net.  Zie foto's hieronder.

Tout autour de l'ensemble des 15 carrés un bord ajouré a été brodé, dans lequel j'ai essayé d'incorporer le plus grand nombre de points différents.  Pour la technique, les finitions et les points, je me suis inspirée d'un autre livre de Luzine Happel : FINITIONS ET BORDURES.  Cet ouvrage fournit toute information technique nécessaire à pourvoir d'un magnifique bord approprié, non seulement une broderie schwalm mais n'importe quel ouvrage à l'aiguille.  Richement illustré, ce livre guide et conseille clairement la brodeuse dans la préparation, l'organisation, le calcul et les finitions de bords, d'ourlets et d'angles.
Les 4 côtés de mon cadre ajouré sont tous différents.  Les plus courts sont munis de points enroulés (Wickelstiche) et de points carrés.  Les côtés longs, eux, contiennent le point carré, un jour et une variation sur le point d'oeillet.
Finalement, afin d'encadrer mon sampler, j'ai laissé un ourlet de 3,5 cm de large, que j'ai liséré d'un petit croquet au point arrière.

Around these 15 squares I embroidered a border in a choice of different stitches.  For the technique, the finish and the stitches of this surrounding border I based myself on another book by Luzine Happel : FANCY HEMS.  This work supplies all technical information required to provide, not only a Schwalm embroidery but all sorts of needlework, with a beautiful and appropriate hem.  The book is richly illustrated and accompanies the embroiderer in an understandable way through preparation, planning, calculation and finish of borders, hems and corners.
The 4 sides of my surrounding border are all different.  In the 2 short ones I applied pulled thread (Wickelstiche) and square stitches.  The longest sides contain square stitch, openwork and a variation on the eyelet stitch.
To frame my sampler I let a hem of 3.5 cm which I edged with a row in backstitch.

Rondom het geheel van de 15 vakjes is een boord in ajour aangebracht waarin ik heb getracht zoveel mogelijk verschillende steken toe te passen.  Voor de techniek, de afwerking en de steken van deze omringende boord heb ik me laten inspireren door een ander boek van Luzine Happel : RANDABSCHLÜSSE.  Dit werk verschaft alle technische informatie die nodig is om niet alleen een schwalmborduurwerk, maar om het even welk handwerk van een prachtige en gepaste boord te voorzien.  Het boek is rijk geïllustreerd en begeleidt de borduurster op begrijpelijke wijze in de voorbereiding, het plannen, het berekenen en de afwerking van boorden, zomen en hoeken.
De 4 zijden van de omringende boord zijn alle verschillend.  In de 2 korte zijden heb ik omwoelde steken (Wickelstiche) en hokjessteken verwerkt.  De lange zijden bevatten de hokjessteek, een ajour en een variatie op de madeiraster.
Als omlijsting van mijn sampler ten slotte heb ik een zoom van 3,5 cm gelaten die ik heb afgelijnd met een rij stiksteken.

Pour vous dire la vérité, le plus dur de mon sampler a été le choix des points.  En effet, les livres de Luzine Happel offrent sans aucun doute l'embarras du choix.  Quel dommage de me voir contrainte à me limiter à 15 points différents (5 par catégorie) dans le sampler que j'avais choisi !  Voilà pourquoi j'ai mis en route tout de suite un deuxième sampler avec 35 limetrosen, qui avance tout doucement.

To be honest the toughest in this sampler has been the choice of the stitches.  Indeed, Luzine Happel's books offer such an overwhelming choice of beautiful stitches !  I thought it was a downright shame that this embroidery forced me to restrict myself to only 15 different stitches (5 per category).  That's why I decided, after finishing this one, to immediately start a second Schwalm sampler with 35 limetrosen (stell WIP !).

Het moeilijkste aan deze sampler is eigenlijk de keuze van de steken geweest.  Luzine Happels boeken bieden immers zo'n overweldigende keuze aan prachtige steken dat ik het zonde vond me in het gekozen samplermodel te moeten beperken tot slechts 15 verschillende steken (5 per categorie).  Daarom heb ik beslist meteen een tweede sampler op te zetten met 35 limetrosen (nog in uitvoering !).

J'ai brodé ce premier sampler de schwalm sur du lin Gander 14 fils avec du coton à broder DMC nos. 20 et 25 blanc.  Il mesure 58 cm sur 41 cm.

I embroidered this first Schwalm sampler on 35 count linen from the French company Gander, with coton à broder DMC Nos 20 and 25 white.  It is 58 cm by 41 cm.

Deze eerste schwalmsampler is geborduurd op 14-draads linnen van de Franse firma Gander met coton à broder DMC nrs. 20 en 25 wit.  Hij meet 58 cm op 41 cm.

SCHWALM - Luzine Happel (1/2)

L'ouvrage que j'expose dans cet article est un sampler de points de remplissage utilisés dans la broderie schwalm.  Ayant composé cet échantillon moi-même, j'ai puisé l'idée, la méthode et les points dans de différents livres de Luzine Happel.

I dug up for you in this post a sampler with stitches used to fill up Schwalm Whitework patterns.  I composed this sampler myself, but I drew the idea, the method and the stitches from different books of Luzine Happel.

Het handwerk dat deze keer aan bod komt is een merklap (sampler) met steken die gebruikt worden om motieven in schwalmborduurwerk op te vullen.  Mijn sampler heb ik zelf samengesteld, maar het idee, de werkwijze en de steken heb ik geput uit verschillende boeken van Luzine Happel.


Luzine Happel est une créatrice allemande qui s'applique exclusivement à la broderie blanche traditionnelle de Schwalm, une région en Allemagne située sur la rivière du même nom.  Elle a maintenant quelque treize livres à son actif, dont la plupart est publié aussi en version française et anglaise.  A Eschwege (Allemagne), dans un immeuble de 120 m2, Luzine Happel tient une exposition permanente de ses propres broderies schwalm, y compris son chef-d'oeuvre : un sampler gigantesque de 2,70 m sur 1,70 m qui contient 321 différents points de remplissage pour schwalm.  Cette exposition unique et ses nombreux livres représentent l'admirable résultat d'une vie entièrement dédiée à la broderie blanche de Schwalm (Schwälmer Weisstickerei).

Luzine Happel is a German designer, exclusively dedicated to the traditional whitework of Schwalm, a region in Germany located on the river of the same name.  She now has some thirteen books on this subject on her name, the majority of which has already been translated in English and French.  Luzine Happel permanently fills an exhibition hall of 120 m2 in Eschwege (Germany) with her own pieces of embroidery, including her masterpiece : a jumbo-sized sampler that measures 2.70 m by 1.70 m and contains 321 different schwalm fillings.  This unique exhibition and her numerous interesting books represent the awesome result of a lifelong dedication to Schwalm Whitework (Schwälmer Weisstickerei).

J'ai sorti le modèle de ce sampler du livre de Luzine Happel SAMPLERS-REBRODES SUR RESEAU CLAIR, un manuel pour faire des samplers.  Pour faire plus ample connaissance avec ce livre, je vous recommande le site de Mary Corbet Needle 'n Thread.
Mon échantillon est composé de 15 cases de 9 cm sur 9 cm, tracées au passé plat et point carré et séparées les unes des autres par un bord ajouré. 
Pour ce qui concerne le choix des points, je me suis appuyée sur d'autres livres de Luzine Happel : WICKELSTICHE, LIMETROSEN (tomes I et II) et POINT DE REPRISE-REBRODES SUR RESEAU CLAIR.  L'ensemble de ses ouvrages représente une référence incontournable et une source intarissable d'information pour tout amateur de broderie au fils serrés et filet brodé.  Chaque point (408 en total) est traité dans le détail, expliqué en texte clair et illustré de nombreuses photos.
Dans mon sampler j'ai appliqué 3 catégories différents de points :
- des points enroulés (Wickelstiche) dans la première rangée
- des variations sur le point d'oeillet (Limetrosen) dans la rangée du milieu
- et des points de reprises brodés sur réseau (Stopfstiche) dans la troisième rangée.
Plus bas (en dessous de la version néerlandaise de cet alinéa) vous trouverez des photos en gros plan des 5 cases de la première rangée.

I drew the pattern of this sampler from Luzine Happel's book OPENWORK PATTERN SAMPLERS, a manual for making samplers.  For a closer introduction to this book I refer to Mary Corbet's website Needle 'n Thread.
My sampler is composed of 15 squares of 9 cm by 9 cm, all drawn in satin stitch and square stitch and separated from each other by an openwork border.
To choose the stitches I made appeal on yet other books by Luzine Happel : WICKELSTICHE, LIMETROSEN (volume I and II) and OPENWORK NEEDLEWEAVING PATTERNS.  All these works are first-class references and constitute an inexhaustible source of information for all those who are interested in pulled and drawn threadwork and filet embroidery.  Each stitch (408 in all) is clearly explained and illustrated with numerous pictures.
I incorporated 3 types of stitches in my sampler :
- pulled thread (Wickelstiche) in the first row
- variations on the eyelet stitch (Limetrosen) in the middle row
- and darning stitches on filet (Stopfstiche) in the third row.

Het ontwerp voor deze merklap heb ik gehaald uit Luzine Happels boek MUSTERTÜCHER, een handleiding voor het maken van samplers.  Voor een nadere kennismaking met dit boek verwijs ik graag naar Mary Corbets website Needle 'n Thread.
Mijn merklap is samengesteld uit 15 vakjes van 9 cm op 9 cm.  Deze hokjes zijn getekend met platsteek en hokjessteek en van elkaar gescheiden door een boord in ajour.
Voor de keuze van de steken heb ik ook op andere boeken van Luzine Happel beroep gedaan : WICKELSTICHE, LIMETROSEN (deel I en II) en LICHTE MUSTER "STOPFSTICHE".   Al deze werken samen vormen dé referentie en een onuitputtelijke bron van informatie voor al wie houdt van ajour- en filetborduurwerk.  Elke steek (408 in totaal) wordt op een aparte bladzijde uitgebreid toegelicht in begrijpelijke taal en is geïllustreerd met talrijke foto's.
In deze sampler heb ik 3 soorten steken verwerkt :
- omwoelde steken (Wickelstiche) in de eerste rij
- de middelste rij bevat variaties op de madeiraster (Limetrosen)
- en in de derde rij heb ik motieven in stopsteek op een net (Stopfstiche) geborduurd.

RETICELLO - Stella

RETICELLO - Giuliana Buonpadre

J'ai sorti le modèle de ce reticello du STELLE E BORDURE A RETICELLO, le 8ème livre de la créatrice italienne Giuliana Buonpadre.  Cet album contient plusieurs modèles de broderie en reticello, tous clairement expliqués en trois langues (italien, français et anglais) et illustrés de nombreux plans et photos.
En feuilletant ce livre, une envie irrésistible me pris à me mettre aussitôt au travail.  Je portai mon choix sur la Stella 9 (Etoile n° 9).  L'ouvrage s'avérait un bon exercice en reticello et une excellente préparation au Sampler di Irma, que j'ai brodé plus tard, mais qui a déjà été traité dans des articles antérieurs.

I embroidered this reticello from a pattern in STELLE E BORDURE A RETICELLO, the eighth book by the Italian designer Giuliana Buonpadre.  The album contains a choice of reticello embroidery creations, all of them clearly explained in three languages (Italian, French and English) and illustrated with numerous photographs and diagrams.
When leafing through the book I felt an irresistible urge to embroider one of those patterns rightaway.  I chose Stella 9 (Star No 9).  It immediately turned out to be a sound exercise in reticello and an excellent preparation to the Sampler di Irma I embroidered later on, but that already has been posted previously.

Het model van deze reticello komt uit STELLE E BORDURE A RETICELLO, het achtste boek van de Italiaanse ontwerpster Giuliana Buonpadre.  Dit werk bevat meerdere creaties van reticelloborduurwerk, alle duidelijk uitgelegd in drie talen (Italiaans, Frans en Engels) en geïllustreerd met talrijke foto's en tekeningen.
Bij het doorbladeren van dit boek voelde ik een onweerstaanbare drang om er onmiddellijk een ontwerp uit te borduren.  Ik koos voor Stella 9 (Ster nr. 9).  Het werd meteen een degelijke oefening in reticello en een uitstekende voorbereiding op de Sampler di Irma die ik later heb geborduurd, maar in vorige artikels al aan bod heb laten komen.

Stella 9 est composée de 16 petites fenêtres qui forment un carré dans lequel figurent 3 motifs de reticello différents : 8 petites cloches créant, ensemble, la forme d'une étoile (stella) dont les angles sont remplis d'épis ouverts avec picots et dont le centre est constitué de calices posés sur deux arcs avec picots.
Le contour extérieur du carré est enjolivé de petits motifs en style punto antico : passé plat, double point avant et point de poste.

Stella 9 consists of 16 small windows forming a square in which 3 different reticello designs are incorporated : 8 little bells that in overview adopt a star shape (stella) whose corners has been filled up with open ears of corn with picots and whose centre is made up of chalices placed on two arches with picots.
The perimeter of the square is embellished on the outside with motifs in punto antico fashion : satin stitch, cable stitch and bullion stitch.

Stella 9 bestaat ui 16 vakjes die een vierkant vormen en waarin 3 verschillende reticellomotieven zijn verwerkt : 8 klokjes die, als geheel beschouwd, een stervorm (stella) aannemen waarvan de hoeken zijn opgevuld met open korenaren met picots en waarvan het centrum is samengesteld uit kelkjes geplaatst op twee bogen met picots.
Rondom de buitenkant van het vierkant zijn verfraaiingen aangebracht in punto antico-stijl : platsteek, dubbele stiksteek en bouillonsteek.

J'ai brodé ma Stella 9 sur du lin 14 fils, avec du Fiorentino 8 et 12, couleur 47.  En regardant mon ouvrage fini avec un peu de recul, je constate que je suis encore loin de la perfection.  Mais ce n'est qu'en forgeant qu'on devient forgeron, n'est-ce pas ?

I embroidered my Stella 9 on 32 count linen, with Fiorentino Nos 8 and 12, colour 47.  When I look at my finished reticello piece now, it becomes clear that I am still far from perfection.  But only practice makes perfect, doesn't it ?

Mijn Stella 9 is geborduurd op 14 draads linnen, met Fiorentino nrs. 8 en 12, kleur 47.  Bij het bekijken van mijn uitvoering van dit model wordt het me duidelijk dat ik de perfectie nog lang niet heb bereikt.  Maar oefening baart kunst, nietwaar ?

Du tel reticello, c'est de la broderie satisfaisante, car il se prête à de nombreuses applications : à un chemin de table, des coussins, sur du linge de maison, des sacs, etc.  Moi-même, j'ai incorporé une photo de ma Stella 9 dans une carte de voeux de nouvel an, dont vous trouverez une illustration dans le tout premier article de mon blog.

Such reticello is grateful emboidery for it opens numerous applications.  It can be used on a table runner, cushions, home linen, handbags, etc.  I myself have incorporated a photo of my Stella 9 in a greeting card.  You can find an illustration of it in the very first article of my blog.

Dergelijke reticello is dankbaar borduurwerk, want het opent talloze toepassingsmogelijkheden.  Het is bruikbaar op een tafelloper, kussens, huishoudlinnen, handtassen, enz.  Ikzelf heb mijn Stella 9 in een nieuwjaarskaart verwerkt, waarvan een illustratie is te vinden in het allereerste artikel van mijn blog.
