Ce sont les motifs qui forment la particularité de cette broderie et qui la rendent différente du hardanger norvégien traditionnel. En effet, le motif en S, l'étoile à huit pointes et les motifs en croix sont des figures typiques de la région balkanique.
Leur origine remonte à la broderie vénitienne, qui a influencé
considérablement les ouvrages à l'aiguille locaux pendant la domination vénitienne
de la Méditerranée orientale (XIIIe-XVIIe siècles).
Même si au départ ces motifs s'appliquaient le plus souvent sur les
vêtements et en couleurs vives (principalement le rouge et le bleu), nous
retrouvons ici un ouvrage destiné au linge de maison.
L'application la plus connue et en outre plus raffinée de ces motifs se retrouve dans la broderie Lefkara de Chypre.

dit borduurwerk zo speciaal maken en doen afwijken van de traditionele Noorse hardanger. Inderdaad, het S-motief, de achtpuntige ster
en de kruismotieven zijn typische patronen uit het Balkangebied.
Hun oorsprong is terug te
voeren tot het Venetiaans borduurwerk, dat het plaatselijk handwerk sterk heeft
beïnvloed tijdens de Venetiaanse overheersing van het oostelijke Middellandse
Zeegebied (13de - 17de eeuw).
Hoewel deze motieven aanvankelijk
het vaakst in felle kleuren -overwegend rood en blauw- op kledij werden toegepast,
treffen we hier een uitvoering aan voor woningtextiel.
De bekendste en meer verfijnde toepassing daarvan vinden we terug in het Lefkara-borduurwerk (Cyprus).
Accustomed to the traditional Norwegian hardanger, this table center with its special designs typical of the Balkans, surprises. Indeed, the eight-pointed star, the S and the cross patterns are characteristic for this region.
Their origin goes back to the Venetian embroidery, which greatly influenced the local needlework during the Venetian domination of the Eastern Mediterranean (13th-17th century).
Although these designs were initially applied most often in bright colors -predomantly red and blue- on clothing, we here find an adoption for household linen.
The best-known and more sophisticated embroidery using these patterns is Lefkaritiko from Cyprus.
