ASSISI

I dedicated this post to a forgotten technique : the assisi embroidery.
Age-old, but fallen into oblivion, this technique enjoys little prominence in today's embroidery world.  Undeserved, for assisi embroidery is particularly decorative and certainly merits a place in a modern interior.

The particularity of the assisi technique is that not the motif, but the background is filled up.  Making a comparison with photography we could say it's a negative.  Figures are drawn in double running stitch, but remain empty.  On the other hand, the background is filled up with some form of cross stitch in a contrasting colour, traditionally red, blue, green or gold, showing the figures to advantage.

The patterns of my embroidery come from Assisi Embroideries, a book written by Thérèse de Dillmont that has been published by DMC Library and that is free to download on http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books.html.  Once on this webpage click on the letter D in the alphabet and scroll down to Dillmont, Thérèse de-Assisi Embroideries.  Then click on PDF of Part 1 and Part 2 to download both volumes in pdf format.
Two different motives occur in my assisi embroidery : the pattern with the dragons and bunches of grapes (called grape-tail dragons), and the pattern with the birds.  I used the entire dragon motif from plate XV of the afore-mentioned book.  The motif with the birds is the one of plate XX, which I adapted in order to adjust to the height of the dragon pattern.

My assisi has been embroidered on a piece of very old linen and measures 135 cm by 19 cm.  I used a black mouliné thread to draw the outlines of the figures in double running stitch.  It took me about 25 hours to finish one of those patterns in double running stitch.  The background has been filled up in cross stitch with a red mouliné thread.  The filling up is a long-winded work and may turn out a bit tedious in the end.  So, it might be just the right project for those long winter evenings or some hard to live moments in life.
To frame this wide band I first embroidered a row in cross stitch and then a red motif in double running stitch.  Finally, the whole has been finished with a row in Palestrina stitch.  It is the frequent use of the double running stitch in assisi that spontaneously evokes the comparison with blackwork, the embroidery technique where this stitch is essential.
To give a use at my assisi embroidery I finished it with a wide border in black fabric.  Suspended above the bed it became an original wall decoration.

Where does assisi embroidery's name come from ?
The quest for the origins of assisi leads us, as with many other embroidery techniques, to Italy, the land par excellence of magnificent and colourful embroideries.
In the convents of 13th-century Italy an embroidery style developed in which, with coloured silk on fine
linen, only the outlines of the patterns and the background were embroidered.  Since these embroideries were exclusively intended for religious purposes, such as chasubles and altar cloths, only the traditional figures of animals, plants and curly vine tendrils are to be found in original assisi embroidery.

Over the years this embroidery style won approval also in secular circles, which resulted in an extension of the range of figures.  So, from the 16th century on, in full Renaissance period, we find all kinds of mythological creatures in assisi embroideries.
However, sharing the sad lot of many other techniques, also assisi embroidery sank into decline and oblivion during the 18th and 19th century.  Not until the beginning of the 20th century came resurgence and with it its current name.  Indeed, around that time in Italy a movement arose with the intention to reanimate old and forgotten craftsmanships, hoping in that way to provide an additional income to the poor population.  As part of this trend, in 1902 in the Italian city of Assisi -hence the name of this embroidery technique- the Laboratorio Ricreativo Festivo Femminile San Francesco di Assisi was founded, a society where poor girls and women could learn embroidery.  The initiative succeeded and expanded to a flourishing domestic industry that has so far managed to maintain.  In the old city of Assisi you can still see, if you are lucky, local women sitting in front of their houses and executing embroideries intended for sale.  Current Italian embroidery magazines still pay attention to this technique.
