Last summer I embroidered a guest towel ordered by the Italian designer Giuliana Buonpadre.  It is an application of reticello that was to serve as a model on her reticello workshops at the Abilmente needlework fair in Vicenza (Italy) in October 2013.
So, last week I received an e-mail from Italy in which Giuliana informed me that she will also use my work as a base for her advanced reticello workshop at l'Aiguille en Fête, the international needlework fair that takes place in Paris from 6th to 9th February 2014.  My reticello at l'Aiguille en Fête ?!  What a pleasant surprise !  That gives me intense satisfaction and makes me feel as proud as a peacock.
Giuliana wanted a guest towel with a border in different fine reticello motives and embellished with a butterfly in satin stitch, bullion stitch and reticello.  Fabric and thread were supplied and I had a free choice among the motives from Giulana's books.
I embroidered the guest towel on 38 count linen, with Anchor Fiorentino no 12 colour 986 and DMC Dentelle no 80 colours 3688 and 369.  It measures 41 cm by 31 cm.
I posted some photos of my guest towel : just a taste of what's in store for those who sign up for Giuliana Buonpadre's advanced reticello workshop at l'Aiguille en Fête.  Unfortunately, I can't be in Paris at that moment.  But if you are, then please give Giuliana warm regards and a hug from Yolande.

Le reticello en cours d'exécution  |  The reticello guest towel in progress  |  Mijn reticello in uitvoering

With these posters Bart and Francis are announcing their annual open house.
Last year I was there for the first time.  You can find my illustrated experiences on this blog in my review of 1 February 2013.  I liked the event so much that I resolved to revisit.
There are all sorts of exotic and rare types of threads and yarns for embroidery, knitting, lace making, sewing, weaving, spinning and all kinds of other creative applications.  It certainly is a unique experience and an ideal opportunity to get some of those for your stash, and at very reasonable prices too.
So, the 2014 edition of this happening takes place from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th January.  I planned my visit on Saturday 25th January, in the afternoon.  Will you be there too ?  We could exchange our embroidery and knitting experiences and compare our purchases, while enjoying a cup of coffee and their delicious biscuits...

WHITE

It seems to be an annual phenomenon : as soon as autumn arrives I automatically feel a growing impulse to knit, to the detriment of my embroidery.  Just right really !  That prevents me from bothering you with my knitted shawls in midsummer.
As the festive atmosphere of Christmas and New Year hasn't completely evaporated yet I picked this one out : my favourite for special occasions.  Maybe it's due to the colour, but it has something festive.

I have simply called it White, though its baptismal name is Fylleryd.  At least under that name you can find the free pattern, designed by Mia Rinde, on Ravelry.
This triangular shawl has been knitted from the middle of the longest side (the neck) down to the bottom point of the triangle.  There are three pattern sections to distinguish in this shawl.  The first one, and also the largest, is that with the leaf motif.  The second pattern section contains a beautiful berry motif with nupps and the third one is an openwork lace border.
White (or Fylleryd) has been designed and knitted in Estonian lace tradition.  The nupps, so characteristic in Estonian lace, are a clear indication for that.  Moreover, it is the guarantee that the shawl is hand knitted, because no knitting machine is able to realize nupps.
The leaf motif of the first pattern section  -at least that's the designation used by the designer herself-  bears a strong resemblance to the fields of flower described in Heirloom Knitting, a book on Shetland lace (Scotland) by Sharon Miller.  The same motif appears in Haapsalu sall, a work on Estonian shawls written by Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi.  But there it's called käpakiri.  A similar motif is found in Orenburg lace too (Russia) and there it has been named mouse prints.  Strange how the same beautiful motifs in lace knitting are popping up everywhere, isn't it ?  There is only a dinstinction in name according to region or country, and, sometimes, just a slightly different way of execution.

Just like in the case of my Rouge de Noël - Christmas Red one can change aspect and dimensions of White (Fylleryd) too by playing with the repetition of the pattern sections.  In my version I knitted six times the first pattern section, the one with the leaf motif, and I repeated two times the second section with the berry motif.  The lace border contains, besides the same berry motif with the nupps, an area in lace knitting.  It is clear that this lace border can be knitted only once.

The required amount of yarn depends, of course, on the type of yarn, the thickness of the used needles and the number of repetitions of the pattern sections.  One of the models Mia Rinde is presenting on Ravelry has been knitted in Grignasco Merinosilk.  For my own version I choose DROPS Lace, colour Naturel, less expensive and a pleasure to knit.  DROPS Lace is sold in skeins of 100 gr and consists of 70 % Baby Alpace and 30 % Mulberry Silk.  For my White I needed 650 gr, with needles 3.0 (US 2 1/2).  It measures 160 cm by 70 cm.
