The dark days before Christmas...  This is the best time to install yourself in the rocking chair close by the crackling fire, tea pot and biscuit tin at hand, and to cast on a new knitting.

It'll be a shawl, after a model from Sanne Kalkman and known as Percy Shawl.  Anyway, that's the name under which you may find the pattern on Ravelry (free download).  But since my shawl was intended as a Christmas present I renamed it Christmas Red.
Designer Sanne Kalkman got her inspiration for this model from Pitsilised Koekirjad, an encyclopedia of Estonian lace knitting patterns, written by Leili Reimann.  Unfortunately this excellent work hasn't been reissued for a long time.  So it is only available as second hand and may be quite difficult to obtain.

I adore this pattern and knitted it already in brown with a white border.  But this time, and for the opportunity, I did it in Christmas red.
The model is made up of 3 sections : A, B and C.  By playing with these 3 pattern sections one may vary aspect and dimensions of the shawl.  In my version I knitted 8 times pattern section A (must imperatively be a multiple of 4), 3 times pattern section B and 2 times C.
Christmas Red has been knitted with needles 3,5 (US #4) and I needed 225 g (4,5 balls or 902 m) of Baby Superwash-wool, colour Rouge de Mars, of Bouton d'Or.

RETICELLO - PUNTO ANTICO - Giuliana Buonpadre (5/5)

Reticello
L'ouvrage en route  |  Work in progress
Remplissage des 120 fenêtres  |  Filling up the windows

Sampler di Irma - The reticello frame
This last article on my Sampler di Irma concerns the narrow reticello outside frame.
To embroider it I followed almost the same procedure as for the frames in the central square.  First of all I marked the contours in square stitch and then I made an inside frame by working some threads in whip stitch.  Since the narrow reticello frame could hold but one row of windows I removed threads only in horizontal direction (in weft).  This in contrast to the frames of the central square, where threads were pulled out in both directions (in warp and weft).  Then, by cutting away at regular intervals some groups of vertical threads (in warp) and consolidating the remaining threads in darning stitch, I created 120 empty little windows (30 on each side).  Finally I filled up each window with a reticello motif.

A great part of these reticello patterns can be found in the central square too, possibly as a variant (with or without picots).  But to create a contrast between the wide fully embroidered punto antico zone on one side and the broad hem on the other, for this narrow reticello frame I chose airy motifs.  Reason why you won't find the little bell here.  Moreover, these openwork patterns help to give a certain lightness to the whole embroidery.
In addition to the motifs that are also found in the central square several new reticello patterns may be discovered in this narrow frame, as the cross with petals (incrocio con petali), the acorn (ghianda), the cross with little wheel (incrocio con rotella) and the leaflet (foglietta).
Each side of this frame holds the same reticello patterns, though perhaps not always in the same order.
Finally, by way of a general frame and to showcast the embroidery, I bordered the whole with a 4,5 cm wide double hem.

And this brings us to the end of the presentation of my Sampler di Irma, pattern designed by Giuliana Buonpadre.
A work of several months, of stitching and pulling out again, with lots of good and as many bad days.  Nevertheless, the execution of it gave me intense embroidery pleasure and was well worth every tiny stitch I had to make.
And now, looking at it after some months, the result is quite satisfying.  To be honest, I'm feeling a little bit proud too, because only some years ago I wouldn't have been capable of such work.
So, I wish you, who are looking at these photos, the desire and the courage to embroider your own Sampler di Irma.  I truly recommend it.  With a project of this size several months of embroidery delight lie ahead of you, with numerous awards at the end of the ride : a considerable enrichment of your embroidery experience, a heartfelt satisfaction and an injection of self-confidence.  Just what an embroiderer needs to look forward to the next challenge...

Before closing definitively this reticello topic, I cannot resist serving you a last history lesson :

FROM RETICELLO TO NEEDLE LACE  :  THE HISTORY (5/5)
During the 17th century needle lace in France expanded to a national industry.  Each city gave its name to the product that was manufactured and refined in its own ateliers : le Point d'Alençon (Alençon Lace), le Point d'Argentan (Argentan Lace), le Point de Sedan (Sedan Lace), etc.  Although French needle lace  -because of its wealth and refinement-  supplanted more and more the pure reticello, difficult times were about to happen to this flourishing craft too.
Louis XIV, precisely the same who brought French lace industry to prosperity through his bright minister Colbert, would inflict a first nasty blow to it.  After Colbert's death, and in the absence of a competent substitute, Louis XIV became more and more fanatically catholic and in 1685 let himself be influenced to revoke the Edict of Nantes.  This regulation, issued by Henry IV in 1598 to bring religious wars to an end, guaranteed freedom of religion and granted extensive civil rights to the Protestants.  So, the withdrawal of this edict by Louis XIV resulted in the expatriation of 200.000 Huguenots.  For the most part craftsmen belonging to the richer middle class, these Protestants with their commercial activities and great professional experience henceforth would fill the coffers of France's neighbours.
In addition to this, French needle lace had to deal with a growing competition from the cheaper bobbin lace coming from the North.  While needle lace has come to full bloom particularly in France, in Flanders it was indeed bobbin lace which lends international renown to its centers as Bruges, Brussels and Mechelen.  Should neelde lace be the evolutional and logical consequence of embroidery, it is generally assumed that weaving was the foundation of bobbin lace.  But that's a different story.
Protectionist measures were taken by several European countries to preserve their own products, but they were incapable of sealing their borders hermetically.  The result was a flourishing smuggling.  The English customs officers must have been completely dazed when coming upon a bale of precious lace in a coffin instead of the corpse of an English minister deceased in the Netherlands.  And it is well-known that a great deal of Flemish lace was smuggled into France by means of specially trained dogs.
But it was the French Revolution (1789) that gave the deathblow.  Indeed, lace was considered as luxury and linked with nobility.  The conséquences were disastrous for the French lace industry.  Numerous manufacturing centers closed and quite a few of their delicate techniques and traditions, which until then had represented the pride of French lace industry, were lost for ever.
The attempt of Napeleon I Bonaparte, at the beginning of the 19th century, to breathe new life into French needle lace trade didn't produce the desired result.  And soon, even in this sector the Industrial Revolution broke through, replacing handiwork by machine-made lace.  No matter how, changes in fashion and habits were the reason why lace-making didn't survive the 20th century on industrial level.
After being pushed in oblivion for two centuries by real lace, Reticello however, since the first half of the 20th century is enjoying a renewed attention and revives as embroidery technique among amateurs.  Indeed, modern designers, looking for nouveautés and originality, browse in the past.  Old techniques get contemporary applications or, by using modern thread and colours, are being attuned to current taste and fashion.  So, there is nothing new under the sun.  Or to quote the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) : Rien ne se perd, rien ne se crée, tout se transforme... (Nothing gets lost, nothing is created, everything is transormation...).

Meanwhile it will be clear that Reticello, although nowadays considered and practiced as a stand-alone embroidery technique, actually has been an indispensable intermediate, an essential stage in that complex but logical evolution from embroidery towards lace.

RETICELLO - PUNTO ANTICO - Giuliana Buonpadre (4/5)

Sampler di Irma - The punto antico section
In the two previous articles I described the central square of my Sampler di Irma into detail.  This time we take a close look at the punto antico section, namely the wide zone between the central square and the narrow outside frame with the 120 reticello windows, topic of my next article.
This wide zone, which actually is composed of 4 bands of different width, constitutes a broad frame around the central square.  Each side of it is identical with the opposite one.
Just as in the central square I started by tracing all sections in square stitch.  Only then I filled up the areas in punto antico style : patterns in satin stitch embellished with bullion stitch and curl stitch.
I am sure it hasn't escaped your notice that this punto antico style is showing a striking resemblance to hardanger embroidery.  You're right : it's all about the same stitches.  But in hardanger embroidery they are placed and combined in a different way.
So, could there be a connection between these two embroidery techniques ?  Unlikely, one might think.  After all, Punto Antico already came to entire development during the 15th-16th century in Italy, while the Hardanger technique knew its full bloom only 300 years later (19th century) in Norway.  And yet, the resemblance is so striking.  So, I believe that Punto Antico, if it wasn't the basis, must have significantly influenced the Hardanger technique.  I don't know (yet) how the connection precisely worked.  However, the topic is fascinating enough to carry out some research.  I'll keep you informed as soon as I have found an explanation for the remarkable similarity between Punto Antico and Hardanger.    But now back to my Sampler di Irma.

The first band of the wide punto antico area, the nearest one to the central square, contains patterns in satin stitch embellished with bullion stitch and curl stitch.  The 4 sides of this band are almost identical.  Only a slight difference in the central pattern makes the distinction.
The corners of this band are not simply closed, but worked out with a square pattern that, because of its size, cuts into the second band, which is much wider.

In the second band too all sections have been traced previously in square stitch and then filled up with patterns in satin stitch, bullion stitch and curl stitch.
Some openwork windows, containing a simple reticello pattern in buttonhole stitch, introduce the necessary lightness in this fully embroidered zone.  A slight difference in the central satin stitch pattern of each side  -cable stitch instead of curl stitch-  is, here again, the reason why the sides are not all identical, but equal two by two.  The reticello patterns in the openwork windows too give some variation.
The corners of this second band are closed and contain, in addition to the large square pattern of the first band, a small corner pattern in satin stitch.
The third band of the punto antico area contrasts with the other ones by the absence of bullion stitches.  Only square stitch, satin stitch and curl stitch were used for this band.
The fourth band, bordered in square stitch like all the other sections of this embroidery, exclusively contains patterns in satin stitch.

Figure 5

A suivre...

In the next and also last article on my Sampler di Irma I'll spotlight the narrow outside frame with the 120 reticello windows.  But before closing this one, another bit of history :

FROM RETICELLO TO NEEDLE LACE  :  THE HISTORY (4/5)
Needle lace, in its evolution towards symbol of opulence and wealth, sometimes reached in its applications the level of extravagance and even nonsense : lace collars grew to outrageous size (see IMAGE 5) and under Louis XIII (1601-1643) even weaponry and horse harness were decked out with lace.
Image 5

Despite the insanely high prices demand for needle lace continued to rise and reached its peak in France under Louis XIV (1638-1715).  Nevertheless, up to half of the 17th century, producing centers of fine embroidery and needle lace remained restricted to Venice and, because of their close commercial ties and cultural cooperation, also to Flanders.  Change came when the French Sun King (Le Roi Soleil - Louis XIV) realized the colossal capital flow that escaped from his country caused by purchasing Venitian needle lace.  He ordered Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), then Minister of Finance and State, to do something about it.  When a simple protectionist measure  -the imposition of heavy import duties on Venetian needle lace-  didn't have the desired effect on the financial outflow, Colbert showed a smart example of his political ingenuity.  He invited the best Venetian and Flemish embroiderers to France and installed them under particularly advantageous and privileged conditions in the Royal workshops in Paris, Alençon and later on also in Argentan, Sedan and Reims.  Although initially there was no essential difference with Venetian embroidery, roughly called Point de Venise so far, Colbert saw to it that the in France manufactured neelde lace was called Point de France.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert
Colberts measures turned out to be a direct hit.  The Point de France immediately gained support and the financial outflow towards Italy shrank visibly.  This inflicted such a heavy blow on the Venetian lace industry that the Italian city-state issued severe measures against emigrating embroiderers and their family members staying behind.  Too late.  In the meantime French needlewomen had become familiar with the delicate technique and the Royal workshops produced the finest and most beautiful needle lace.
Curiously, a similar scenario took place in early 18th-century Russia, to which Venetian needle lace had found its way too and where it was being paid in gold by the Russian nobility.  To stop the financial outflow Tsar Peter the Great (1685-1725) invited Venetain nuns to the convent of Kadom (approx. at 500 km South-Est of Moscow), where they trained local embroiderers in Venetian needle lace.  The synergy between the acquired Venetian skill and the traditional Russian embroidery techniques gave birth to a new, very laborious but unique needle lace, known under the name of Kadomsky Veniz.

To be continued...

RETICELLO - PUNTO ANTICO - Giuliana Buonpadre (3/5)

Sampler di Irma - The central square

The central square of my Sampler di Irma (pattern created by Giuliana Buonpadre) contains 4 frames with 16 windows each.
In the November 1st review I presented you 2 frames in detail.  This time we take a closer look at the 2 other ones :

3. The frame with the flower

I embroidered the same reticello motif in the 4 central windows as well as in the 4 corner windows of this frame : petal with quarter-circle worked twice, executed in buttonhole stitch.
However, the motifs in the center are placed in such a way that the 4 petals form a whole flower whose round heart is made up by the 4 quarter-circles.
On the other hand, in the corners, the petals with quarter-circles worked twice have been embroidered in the other direction.  Reason why they present a completely different look.
The other 8 windows of this frame contain an ear of corn with 4 picots on both sidesSpiga di 4 pippiolini per lato it's called in Giuliana Buonpadre's book.  These motifs too are done in buttonhole stitch, but placed in such a way that they form a geometrical shape : a square on its corner (rhomb).

4. The frame with the open ears of corn

The 4 central windows of this frame contain each of them an open ear of corn with 4 picots on both sides (spiga aperta di 4 pippiolini per lato), executed in buttonhole stitch.  In the very middle, on the intersection of these 4 windows, I embroidered 4 times 2 bullion stitches, where in Giuliana Buonpadre's pattern picots are suggested.
Each corner of this frame has been filled up with a quarter-circle worked twice with a flower and 2 arches, a more complicated reticello motif in buttonhole stitch.
The other 8 windows are embellished with an empty leaf between 2 little arches in buttonhole stitch (foglietta vuota tra due archetti).

A suivre...

In the next article I will continue with a close-up of the wide band in punto antico style that surrounds the central square of my Sampler di Irma.  But before closing, another bit of history :

FROM RETICELLO TO NEEDLE LACE  :  THE HISTORY (3/5)
Reticella and Punto in Aria soon occupied a prominent place among Italian artistic crafts and propagated rapidly.  With the invention of printing the first books with Reticello and Punto in Aria patterns already started to circulate in Italy from the 16th century on.  Moreover, via the existing trade routes finished Venetian embroidery soon found its way to the rest of Europe.
Aristocracy also played a not insignificant role in the avidity for Venetian luxury articles.  Catherine de' Medici's (1519-1589) trousseau contained a luxurious wardrobe and a lot of delicate embroideries when, in 1533, she arrived in France to marry the future King Henry II.

Image 4

And Marie de' Medici (1573-1642), Catherine's distant relative, also introduced her Italian feeling for art, luxury and refinement when marrying in 1600 the French King Henry IV.  Image 4 shows Marie de' Medici with a collar in reticello and punto in aria.
The somptuous and artistic fashion of the French court immediately won great approval and was imitated by the entire nobility.  Reticello and Punto in Aria, often applied together on collars, cuffs, stomachers and trimmings, became a precious and intensely desired status symbol.  The French King Henry III (1551-1589), as history tells us, attached such great importance to the impeccable look of his lace collars that he didn't hesitate to iron them himself.  Gosh ! What a guy !

To be continued...
